“Go ahead,” Chancy urged her. “You’re among friends.”
“Well… Okay. I was wondering if you could use some part-time help. I don’t know anything about antique furniture but I can learn. And I really need a job.”
“I’m afraid—”
“Just give me a trial,” the girl interjected pleadingly. “You won’t even have to pay me at all if you don’t like my work.”
“Part-time, you say?”
“Yes. Any hours are fine. Honest. Then, even if you can’t use me often I’ll have a work record here and I can use you for references.”
“I suppose that would be okay,” Chancy said. She smiled benevolently and nodded, her mind made up.
“The back room needs lots of cleaning up and sorting out. Come in on Friday and I’ll give you an opportunity to show me what you can do.”
“Super! Thanks.”
Before the girl turned away, Chancy noted that there were unshed tears in her eyes. Poor thing. She must really need a job. Well, good. Now she had one, even if it wouldn’t pay much. And the shop had the part-time help that Nate had insisted was needed.

Nate was waiting on the porch with Ted and Domino when Chancy pulled into the yard that evening.
He was the only one who got up and came down the steps to greet her.
When she saw him glance at his watch she said,
“Sorry if I’m a little late. Some people came in just as I was getting ready to close.”
“Did they buy anything?”
Chancy smiled. “No. But I may have found that part-time employee you suggested. One of the women from my Sunday-school class stopped by to ask me for a job.”
“Well, at least you know her.”
“Yes, and no,” Chancy said. “I only met her a couple of weeks ago.”
“You didn’t hire her, did you?”
She shrugged. “Sort of. I told her she could come in on Friday and I’d give her a trial. She doesn’t know much about antiques but she’s eager to learn.
And she said she really needs the money, so…”
Nate was shaking his head. “I don’t believe you people around here. You trust everybody. ”
“It’s the way things are when you live in the country,” Chancy replied. “You don’t understand that because you’re not…”

“From around here,” he said to complete her sentence. “Yes, I know. And the longer I’m here, the happier I am that I’m not.”
She squared her shoulders, her chin jutting with self-assurance and defiance. “That is the second saddest thing I’ve heard today.”
“Oh?” His eyebrows arched. “What’s the first?”
“That your grandparents are moving away. I think that’s a huge, huge mistake.”
“Opinion noted. And I’ll thank you to keep it to yourself,” Nate said matter-of-factly.
“In a pig’s eye. You may think you have all the answers but you’re not even close, mister.” Continuing to face him, she fisted her hands on her hips.
